A Question....

Okay, I've got a couple of questions for you and information about my giveaway

In my posts I generally provide a link to the recipe I made instead of posting the recipe here.   Would you guys rather I give you the recipe or are you okay following the link?  My feelings are that if I provide the recipe here you are less likely to check out the other blog.  My second question is many of the recipes I make are not the previous blog's recipe but an adaptation from another source.  Do I need to state where the recipe originated from if I'm not giving the recipe?

Giveaway info......In my previous post I mentioned that I would be giving away two books.  The first book is The Food Lover's Companion  and the second  is Martha Stewart's Cupcakes.  Martha's cookbook is not in print yet (June 2nd) so I will be pre-ordering it for the winner. The winner will be announced on Saturday May 2nd and you'll have until Thursday, April 30th to enter.  I'm  going old school and the winner's name will be pulled out of a hat by Babygirl on May the 1st..  Now on to the important stuff how to enter. All you have to do is leave me a response to my questions. Good luck!

Hey Ingrid! What a stellar giveaway!! As for your questions, I think it's wonderful when you provide the link, but I don't think it hurts to include the recipe as well. I know that I add a bunch of blogs to my reader just because I saw them on blogs like yours! That being said, I think having the recipe in front of me and seeing your adapatations is super convenient and helpful. As for taking recipes from other sources, I usually cite to them, unless the recipe is so completely adapted that it seems pointless. I really do this just in case it's a great recipe and anyone else wants to find the source. Whew, I should breathe now, right?! That was very long winded. Hope you're having a fabulous Sunday!

WOW what a great giveaway!!

Now onto your Q’s, what I normally do is give the person(s) credit via a link which I only think is appropriate to feed back to the source. I do include the recipe even with my own adaptations so I have it at my finger tips should I wish to recreate this said recipe again. Hope this helps :0)

Great giveaway Ingrid :)

I'd suggest that you post the recipe because it gives everyone a single, consistent source to reproduce the recipe from. Particularly when you're adapting the recipes. But you could also mention the name of the blog where you adapted it from...there..I made your life a bit harder ;)

Good morning Ingrid! Love the giveaway!! I too have found lots of wonderful blogs from people who link to the person who first posted. And yes it's really nice to have the recipe here to look over and see your wonderful adaptions!!

PuraVida said...

I would like it if you posted the recipe on your page, but of course provided a link to credit where it came from! I don't think that you need to source it all the way back to the original site, but only where you got it from.

I always wonder the same thing when I post a recipe on my blog.....
I tend to do both. I like giving props where it's deserved and I'd like for folks to check out where my inspiration came from. I also like posting the recipe though. I've actually been going back into my own blog to bake a recipe that we really enjoyed. : )
Love your giveaway, btw!

I always list my sources so people won't come after me. I don't see anything wrong with putting a link to another site.

Awesome giveaway!!
I love the Food Lover's companion, though I don't own a copy. We have an old edition at work that we play trivia with on slow nights.
So, for myself personally, when I am reading a blog, I like to see the recipe as the blog author made it in front of me. I also like to have a link for the original source, so I can see what was adapted/substituted/abridged. I don't really like following a chain of links across the internet to get to an original.
When writing my blog, I generally give the original recipe, along with the original source, and any links that might be between the two. Of course, sometimes I get lazy and only post links, particularly if I don't think I'll ever make the recipe again.

Good giveaway idea! Although my copy is a few years old, I love my food lover's companion and refer to it often.

As for your questions, I think that if you made a recipe and followed the exact directions that are on the original recipe's site, then you can just put link to it. Sometimes it's just easier to do this, especially if you're in a hurry. And like you said, it's a good way to get people to actually go to the other blog. However, if you change the recipe in any way, then you should post the recipe on your blog. Either way, it's just important that you give credit somewhere in your post, which you always do.

Great giveaway, Ingrid! I like to give shout outs to other blogs if I get the recipe there, so I will typically post links to original recipe. I also post it within my blog entry with my adaptations...either way, I think it's completely up to you!

Maria said...

I like to include the recipe. If you got it from another blog, I would for sure mention them and give a link. Great giveaway!

Pam said...

I always add a link back to the recipe site but still type up my recipe. I usually adapt recipes so I like to keep track of how I made it and what changes I used.

Both cookbooks sound great.

Abby said...

I provide the link if I found the recipe from another blogger. If it's epicurious, allrecipes, etc. I post it!

I don't mind following links - you never know what you might find at the end of it!

Reeni said...

I think a link is O.K. if the recipe is from another blogger, especially if your using their recipe exactly as is and if it is their original. If you make a lot of changes to it I think it is O.k. to post it. I don't mind checking out links because sometimes that leads me to discovering new blogs. I don't think you need to put the originating source, just the source of where you found it. Your giveaway rocks!

Lori said...

Great giveaway! You rock Ingrid!

I like to see the persons adaptation in the recipe so I would like to see it on your site. It makes it convenient. Plus I think its a nice record for yourself in case one of those links goes away.

I always like the link back too because sometimes I do the recipe and like to see which on I would prefer.

Heather said...

i always like having the recipe written out on the same blog page. i think when it is a close adaptation, you should give credit to the other blogger. when it is a total makeover, then i think it's up to you.

i know if i see my recipe a week later on someone's blog and the only change is 1 tsp of vanilla instead of 1 1/2, i get a little annoyed....

Jodi said...

Hi Ingrid!
I almost always follow a link if it's given, but I also prefer to have the recipe on the blog I'm reading. The reason is because then you can type your comments/changes right next to the recipe and it's easy to see. But most importantly, the link is most needed to give credit where credit is due. To your second question, I'd say "yes" only because some toes might get stepped on otherwise...better to be safe than sorry.
Watch any baseball tonight??? The Rockies lost by one run to the Diamondbacks. :(
Great giveaway. I don't own any of Martha's books but I've always enjoyed looking at her magazines.

Kerstin said...

Yay for a fun giveaway! I like seeing both the link and recipe, especially if you made a few changes to it.

Monica H said...

If you get a recipe from another blog, I think you should link to them and give them credit, but I prefer to see the recip on the blog I am visiting for two reasons...1) I like to see the pictures and look through the ingredient list of the recipe and 2) If for some reason the other blogger moves/deletes their blog or their post, then the recipe may not be available. If you post the recipe you can guarantee that people won't have any problems viewing and making it.

Also, if you make any adaptations to the recipe, I think you should post the recipe since it will be different from the original.

But that's just my opinion :-)

Irene said...

Ingrid, I love having the recipe in front of me, especially with comments and adaptations - this is why getting recipes from favorite bloggers is so awesome, because you trust their taste and experience. However, I also really like to know where the recipe came from because I love discovering new blogs and sources for recipes!

Cristine said...

Great giveaway!

For me, as long as you give credit to where you found the recipe, that is good enough. I always like to link back to the blog and include the recipe, but it doesn't bother me to click through to another blog for a recipe. :)

Christy said...

What a great giveaway Ingrid!! :)

I have always sourced where I found the recipe, to give credit to the author that inspired me to try the recipe to begin with. Also, I too like to see the recipe on the blog I'm visiting. It seems to make it easier to review the author's thoughts/adaptations/additions etc.

Aimée said...

What a great giveaway Ingrid! Lucky us.
I prefer if the recipe is posted on the blog I am currently reading. Usually the photo gets my attention (or caption/title) and I skim the recipe to see if I like what goes in it, if I can afford the ingredients (3 cups of crab? No way!) and if ingredients are available to me. I also like to skim the method to see how long it takes. If I have to open another tab and wait for another blog to load, just to discover I don't want to make the recipe after all, well it wastes my time.
So there!

Sara said...

I'm happy to follow the link, saves some time on your part too! I think the recipe origination question is a bit tricky - I try to give credit where possible, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary. More of a courtesy than anything else.

Anonymous said...

I think if the recipe is on the internet already it's best to link to it. If I'm interested in a recipe I will click links.

Great giveaway!

Nikki Jean said...

yay for giveaways!

I think the answer to your questions is whatever you feel like doing. I usually get my recipes from cookbooks & other blogs. I usually butcher the heck out of them by changing ingredients & amounts and then type up my version of the recipe and still give credit to whomever I stole it from. But that's just what I feel like doing!

Donna-FFW said...

Id say link and post. My humble opinion. Always love to find new blogs, but always enjoy your revisions as well.

Steph said...

I would say definitely post the recipe! It's nice to be able to see your adaptations too. As for your second question, I sometimes wonder about that too. I've seen people do almost a chain of links going back to the original source. For me, I think it depends on how many changes were made. If it was just differnt add ins, then I would give credit to the original source. If somehow along the way, it got adapted into something that's not even recognizable than the original then I think it's ok to just link back to the previous person.

Emily said...

I'm okay with following a link. I think technically we're not supposed to post published recipes.

This is a fun giveaway! Your banana pudding looks delicious. I want some.

Stephanie said...

I so didn't even know Martha was doing a new book! (I live in a hole, sometimes) I think how you do it is fine - with posting a link: I know I generally click them and go to the source because I am always curious how other versions/adaptations come out. But then again, you could put the recipe yourself too. I do, (along with linking to and crediting the source) because for some reason, I am paranoid that maybe one day the link to which I am linking will disappear (and you get one of those very upsetting URL Not Found type pages UUUHHH). And then I wouldn't be able to find the recipe to make it again! Hope this helps!

I think it'd be great to post the recipe on your blog, esp if you've made a few adaptations, but also provide a link. that way we can see how yours differed from the original ones.

Eliana said...

Hey Ingrid. What a great giveaway. As for your question - I always post the recipe as a courtesy and I also link it back to where I found it if I can. I know sometimes that means the reader may not check out a fellow blogger if applicable but what I would do then is talk about the blog - why is it great/why do you like it. Hoe this helps.

What a sweet giveaway! About the recipe/link question, I think linking to the recipe is a great idea! If people are too lazy to CLICK a link... then that's a whoooole other story! :P

Sydney said...

What a fun giveaway! I do think you should post the recipe on your blog, though, especially if you made any changes or did anything technically that is important for the recipe to turn out well. Sometimes other recipes are difficult to follow, too, so it's easier to figure them out if someone rewrites them!

Jennifer said...

This is a fantastic giveaway! I like it when the recipe is included on the blog I'm reading, especially if you made changes, because it makes it easier to understand what's going on (rather than flipping between two tabs). Plus, I usually check out the source blog, both to double-check recipes for changes or clarification, and just because I love finding new blogs! So there's my two cents, I suppose! Keep up the fantastic work!

Risa said...

Hi Ingrid,
So glad I had time to comment before the give away. I always list the recipe on my posts so you can tell that is my preference. I like to skim over the ingredients in a recipe before I decide if I want to make it so it is nice to have it right there. If i think it is a good recipe I always check the original source because I assume they have other great recipes. As for you second question, I would still reference the original source just to be safe.

Love your blog!

Dianne said...

Look at you having your first give away! My baby is growing up! ;)

I like the link idea. I'm with you it gives the person who came up with the recipe more traffic that way.

If you've completely changed the recipe then no need to mention the other one, but if it is similar then I would.

Whitney said...

Hi Ingrid-Great give away!
First question: I like that you provide the link because it does make me visit the original site and it helps me discover new food blogs which is always exciting!
Second question: If you change the recipe so much that it really becomes your own, like subbing out over half the ingredients then I would say it's your own and you can take credit. But if it's pretty similar then just go ahead and link to the other person's site, but still write out your substitutions and changes because that's interesting!

Thanks,
Whitney

i think for recipes it's up to you. that's great that you want people to visit the original blog. if you post the recipe on your blog, that's fine too as long as you have the link (that's what i do)

for the adaptation - as long the other blogger lists the adaptations and where the original recipe came from, i don't bother to duplicate that info - i will just link to them

great giveaway!

ErinsFoodFiles said...

I'm not sure about you, but part of the reason I blog is to keep a collection of recipes for MYSELF of dishes I liked. So that's why I usually always post the full recipe. That's just my opinion.

And also my opinion if adapt the recipe, you should still show where you got the original from. I once made Vanilla Bean Meringues, and the original, Cooking Light recipe did not call for them to be dipped in chocolate, but I had recently seen someone make raspberry meringues and dip those in chocolate. So when I posted that recipe, I said I was "inspired" by such-and-such blogger and linked to them as well. I believe in spreading the love! :D

Andi said...

I don't mind following links, but if it's an adaptation, I would link to the original and post my version of it.

Joanna said...

I like following your links - I really like to see what blogs the bloggers that I respect most are reading. Also, I come from a journalism background and so full disclosure is always appreciated.
Toward the same end, I'd like to see the original recipe (in link form) as well as how you adapted it so that I might decide whose course to follow or learn how to come up with my own adaptations.
Thanks!

Amy said...

I like to either post the changes that I made to the recipe or the recipe with my changes. I always try to link back to the origianl post where I first saw the recipe so that people have the option of seeing where I got it from.

Noodlegirl said...

I think links are good and like what alot of people mentioned if you made some changes, add it in the post. OH love the giveaway

aubrie said...

Hi Ingrid. I just found your blog from a link on another website (The Crepes of Wrath) I deifnitely like it when people provide a link to the original recipe so that I can go look at the original source, but I agree that it helps to include it in your post if you have made changes to the original recipe. As far as citing the original source if the other blog adapted it, too, I think it's always best to give credit if you know where it originally came from.
Thanks!
