Only Because I said I would

NOT because I wanted to!  These photos flat out stink but I said I would so, here it is nutella marshmallow mousse.

DSC03118_edited-1

There are a few things I want to say about this mousse.  First, it didn’t change my thoughts on chocolate.  It was good but it was chocolate.  What I did love was the mousse part of this!  I’m kicking myself for all the times I passed up chocolate mousse because it was chocolate.  I’ve never tasted a traditional mousse but this one was creamy and silky smooth.  I just loved the texture.    Now I have to find some mousse recipes that aren’t chocolate.  Anyone have a vanilla mousse recipe?

Nutella Marshmallow Mousse by the Art of Dessert          (Please check out the Art of Dessert my photos don’t do this recipe justice!)

Makes 4 servings
Allergy Note: contains nut and dairy ingredients

4 ounces marshmallows (about 2 cups of mini marshmallows or 16 large marshmallows)*
1/4 cup whole milk**
6 tablespoons Nutella chocolate-hazelnut spread
1 cup heavy whipping cream

Using a strainer, rinse the mini marshmallows over cold running water. (Why rinse the marshmallows? It removes the cornstarch and powdered sugar on the outside. Skip this step and you won't have a smooth and silky mousse. Trust me.) In a microwave-safe bowl, combine marshmallows, milk and Nutella. Microwave for 1 to 2 minutes. Mix until smooth. Set aside to cool.

In another mixing bowl, beat the whipping cream to soft peaks. Take 1/4 of the whipped cream and mix it into the Nutella mixture. Gently fold in the rest of the whipped cream. Transfer into margarita glasses, goblets or ramekins. Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. Garnish with whipped cream, shaved chocolate or fruit.

To make the chocolate filigree heart:
Draw the heart design on a piece of parchment paper. Turn the parchment paper over and place it on a flat surface. Melt some dark chocolate (I used white chocolate) and pour it into a pastry bag with a small round tip or a cornet (parchment paper cone). Pipe the chocolate onto the heart design and let it set.

*Note:  I used homemade marshmallows.                                   **Note:  I used 2% milk.

  1. I have one for a strawberry mousse that I made years and years ago...I should make it again before I spout off about it..I think it had liquor in it.

And I think your pictures look just fine. I'm not keen on chocolate either but the presentation looks good, and I do like Nutella, so I'd be very tempted to eat a serving of this; just wouldn't want a whole pot.

  5. Who cares about the photos, the sound of the recipe alone is enough to have me running for the kitchen! This sounds completely sinful!

  6. Okay we are totally on the same page about chocolate! So I made a pomegranate mousse with some POM Wonderful juice and it is out of this world!!!! Seriously you have to try it! I ended up using it as a filling for some pomegranate cupcakes I made but had plenty left over to devour on its own. Best mousse ever=)

  8. Being a chocoholic, I could eat a bunch of this! the nutella would make it even better...sometimes pics don't turn out like we'd like, but it looks good to me!

  10. Oh wow. That looks pretty darn amazing (and the pictures are good enough to make anyone crave the mousse)! I have a bunch of recipes of chocolate-less mousse from a big French book of desserts: earl grey mousse, mint mousse, berry mousse, etc etc! Let me know if you're interested in any, I'd be more than happy to email them your way!

  12. Ingrid you might enjoy a white chocolate mousse. I used to have that for dessert all the time at a restaurant we used to go years ago. I'm sure you could find a white chocolate recipe on allrecipes, or recipezaar. Those are two sites I go to all the time. As far as your photos go they look fine to me...your mousse looks terrific and sounds great too!

I've never eaten Nutella. I'd like to try the REAL stuff, not the Americanized version, but I don't know where to find it!

  18. sorry, I've been scarce here for a while. Say what? Your photos are fine. What'd I miss? You don't like chocolate desserts? I'm not the only one? I like chocolate, but I don't want it to overpower my dessert. I love mousse, and I don't make it often. I'd make this one, cuz I do like Nutella. You did fine, Ingrid.

  21. sometimes, pictures just aren't needed to portray the deliciousness of a dish. the words nutella, marshmallow, and mousse in combination is enough to convince me!

  22. I think your mousse looks very light and fluffy and I'm wishing I had saved some Nutella from the cupcakes I made a couple weeks ago. doh!

I actually came across a vanilla mousse cheesecake from Kraft the other day and I meant to email it to you but kept forgetting. It has two layers- one of cheesecake and one of mousee, so you could make the whole thing or just the vanilla mousse. I think it has cream cheese in it too. yum!

  23. 1. I am obsessed with nutella. 2. Nutella is a great hangover cure. 3. I would eat my own hand if it were covered in Nutella and actually I am pretty sure I have accidentally bitten myself trying to wipe out some nutella. But I think no matter what you make with nutella it will taste amazing. you can't go wrong. you really can't. So kudos to you, good job. My only complaint is that I didn't get to taste it!

  24. The texture of this mousse looks so light and fluffy...marshmallows are a great idea in mousse! Your white chocolate hearts are adorable. :)

  25. As I know from experience, sometimes the most delicious things don not photograph well. Like chocolate, and mousse, or chocolate mousse.

But the recipe sounds divine and I will be making it soon. Thanks for the post, however reluctant you may be about it!

  26. Yum! i just bought some nutella and I after reading this, I think I may have to put it to better use than just slathering it on toast.

And wait...so, you don't like chocolate? Oh my. But yes, mousse is so good, chocolate or not.

  41. Oh, gosh -- the texture of that mousse alone is worthy of a blog post. DH would just DIE if he knew that the chocolate was your least favorite part of all of this.

That said, I'm thinking you could make mousse out of just about anything. Would white chocolate mousse be more appealing? You could pair that with seasonal berries... which would make my knees pretty weak.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yum, Nutella and Mousse... sounds delicious!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Since you are not a fan of chocolate you were very brave to eat one of these and take one for the team! How 'bout a strawberry mousse- that would be good.
